Millsap man is AJCA’s Herdsman of the Year

Tyler Mackey of Millsap was named Herdsman of the Year and placed sixth in individual all-around competition at the 2008 American Junior Chianina Association (AJCA) National Junior Heifer Show (NJHS) July 4 in Kansas City, Mo.

Herdsman of the Year recognizes a competitor who is well-rounded not only in the care of cattle, but also in dealings with other junior members at the show. Mackey received a belt buckle sponsored by the Keith Dusenberry family of Nebraska.

For his sixth-place finish, Mackey received a fan sponsored by Chi-G Farms, Commerce, Ga., as well as a blanket sponsored by UMB Bank & R.C. Kemper Charitable Trust. All-Around points are based on participation and placings in various events during the week. Mackey placed second in the intermediate stockman’s contest, second in intermediate speech and was a member of the second place intermediate quiz bowl team.

A Star Spangled Extravaganza, the 2008 NJHS, kicked off June 29 and concluded July 4. The AJCA show was held in conjunction with the American Junior Maine-Anjou Association National Junior Show and the American Junior Shorthorn Association Junior Show for the first ever joint junior national event. The American Royal Facility in Kansas City, Mo., hosted the three shows, including 216 Chianina juniors and 265 head of Chi and Chi-influenced cattle from 21 states. Scott Schaake, Manhattan, Kan., was the judge.
