Massive machines vigorously worked on the road outside a white-picket fence that dripped with wisteria.

Inside the Victorian that those picket sentries guard at Lee and Lamar in Weatherford, interesting chit-chat ensued.

"Whose mama wished it, and why a bed and breakfast?" a visitor wanted to know.

Wilton and Carla Jordan were looking for a property in Weatherford when their real estate agent called with the scoop on something perfect.

Mary Martin’s historic two-story birthplace at 414 W. Lee Ave. wasn’t officially on the market. It quickly became the location that fulfilled the quest for Mama’s Wish.

Carla Jordan’s mother, Wilma Crenshaw, had wished for a place where people could stay the night, relax and have a nice breakfast. But she never had the resources and, sadly, Crenshaw passed away several years ago.

But the heart-driven desire remained as inspiration for her daughter’s endeavor, and came to fruition through the Jordans’ aspirations and obvious knack for decorating.

The duo researched aspects of Mary Martin’s life, in relation to their bed-and-breakfast spot. Memorabilia adorns part of the home. A period pillow autographed by Martin rests in a chair in the front parlor.

As a young girl she danced upstairs in the window-lined common area. Now it is a comfy setting of denim sofas and a large screen television.

Guest rooms are quiet and allow residents to ponder life while relaxing in electronics-devoid environments.

The bedrooms are named after the Jordans three children, with the exception of the front west room, which is named for their grandchildren.

Decorated with antiques, period furniture, occasional shabby-chic vignettes, lamps and various sundry, the dwelling creates pleasant experience.

Each room has something that belonged to Mama, honoring Mama’s wish.

From the coffee pot and stocked refrigerator in the hall to the cozy robes supplied to guests in each room, the amenities are plentiful. The Jordans go all out to complement each guest’s stay with a breakfast fit for a Texas cattle baron.

It starts with chili cheese quiche and includes fresh fruit with yogurt sauce, orange juice and cinnamon bread pudding. The gourmet morning feast is served in the formal dining area, set into a sweet nook with a window.

Guests may opt to dine outside on the deck by the pool.

Seems Mama’s Wish was filled to the brim.
