Lady Roos advance to regional quarters at ACU

If anyone was wondering if the Weatherford Lady Roos softball team was focused before this past weekend’s series with El Paso Hanks, it certainly wasn’t head coach Phillip Beyer.

To make sure his girls stayed focused on the task at hand — beating El Paso Hanks — Beyer confiscated all cell phones for the nearly five-hour bus ride to Odessa Friday.

And, apparently, it worked.

Weatherford went out and beat El Paso Hanks, winning the best-of-three series, 2-1. The Lady Roos advance to take on Lubbock Coronado in the regional quarterfinals Friday and Saturday.

Again a best-of-three series, all games will be on the campus of Abilene Christian University. Friday’s Game 1 begins at 7:30 p.m., Saturday’s Game 2 at noon and, if necessary, Game 3 about 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 2.

The Lady Roos began the El Paso Hanks series with a 1-0 win in eight innings Friday after a 10-strikeout performance by Hannah Schnebly.

Saturday’s second game found Weatherford on the opposite end of the scoreboard but they rebounded to win Game 3, 5-0. Schnebly was strong again for the Lady Roos, holding El Paso Hanks to five hits.

New shirts

Beyer said a new batch of Lady Roos playoff shirts should be in today, May 7, and available for purchase. Cost of the shirts is $12. To buy, see Beyer at Weatherford High School or call 817-598-2867.

Henderson signs

Senior Shawna Henderson signed a scholarship April 21 to play softball and sing in the choir at Texas Wesleyan University.

Henderson was responsible for Friday’s Game 1 win as she tripled in the eighth inning to score Megan Askew from first base and end the game.
