Despite Roos loss, playoffs still possible

mwinn@star-telegram.com

It was a night of lasts Friday night at Kangaroo Stadium as the seniors took the field for the final time at home and the stadium saw its last action in its current state.

Unfortunately for the Roos, the last time at home this season wasn’t a storybook ending as they fell to the North Crowley Panthers 21-7.

The loss worsens Weatherford’s record to 1-8 overall, their only win coming in a District 3-5A matchup against Paschal Sept. 26.

Head coach Kenny Wheaton said in his 30-year coaching career, this is the worst record he has ever had.

"This year has been terrible with injuries," he said. "It’s unbelievable. And it isn’t getting better, that’s the scary part."

Wheaton said because of the injury situation, the coaching staff has been cross-training players at different positions in case they need them to step up.

"Thank God for that," he said.

In addition, Wheaton said because it was Senior Night, there was a solid effort made to let everyone play.

"We talked about that at the staff meeting that we wanted to try and get everybody in for at least one play." he said. "I’m very appreciative to the coaching staff we were able to do that."

Despite the injuries and the loss, the Kangaroos still have the chance to make it to the postseason. If they beat Burleson by 12 points or more, they’re in.

"It’d be a great thing if we could make it," Wheaton said.

He stressed however that in order to move past the first round, everybody needs to be healthy.

Friday’s game against Burleson starts at 7:30 p.m.

Renovation now begins

With the home schedule now complete, Phase II of the Kangaroo Stadium renovation, which includes parking, additional seating and a new press box, will begin.
